4th Grade

Language Arts:

        Students read a wide range of literature in different genres, reflecting different cultures and times. They analyze informational texts, consider its overall structure and organization and how the author uses evidence to support points in the text. In writing, students learn to create organizational structures that support their purpose. They learn to use technology to find information, interact and collaborate with others, and produce and publish writing. Students in Fourth Grade use all stages of the writing process to produce clear, coherent writing suited to the purpose and audience. Students learn to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support their main idea with facts, details, and explanations.

Math:

        Students perform multi-digit arithmetic. They use large whole numbers to fluently add and subtract and to develop fluency with multiplication and division. They develop an understanding of fraction equivalents, addition and subtraction of fractions, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers. Students classify geometric shapes based on properties. Advanced Math: Students move more quickly through the grade level curriculum and delve more deeply into various topics.

Religion:

        Students are called to live as Jesus did; choosing a life of love, service and obedience to God especially in light of the Ten Commandments, and developing an understanding of the Christian way of life. We participate in the Invision Shelter Network by preparing and packing lunches for the homeless residents at Julian, and decorate flower pots for Learning & Loving Education Center.

 

Science/Science Lab:

      We have adopted the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). We use the on-line program STEMscopes by Accelerate Learning. STEMscopes follows the 5 E’s approach: Engage (access prior knowledge and address misconceptions), Explore (carry out investigations and activities), Explain (watch videos, surf the web), Elaborate (read topical articles, career connections), and Evaluate (through tests, project and/or presentations.

Social Studies:

        Students study California history, learning about the major language groups of the American Indians and their distribution, social organization, legends and beliefs. Students put into chronological order events and developments that changed the course of California history, such as the Mexican-American War, the Bear Flag Republic, the Gold Rush, and California’s admission to statehood in 1850.

 

Computers/Technology:

           Technology is fully integrated into all areas of the curriculum. iPads are incorporated into the Math and Reading curriculum. During lab time, students work on keyboarding accuracy and speed, and are introduced to Powerpoint, Excel, Word, and Photoshop.

Fine Arts:

          Students learn music for Mass and Prayer Services, and work on class level science play. Participation in Band, Choral Choir, and the Christmas musical is available in 4th grade.

​

Art:

          Weekly classes allow for the expansion of art vocabulary and art appreciation. Several projects are based on the Social Studies curriculum as well as the great masters. Students are exposed to a variety of media and the creation of 3-D pieces. 

​

Physical Education:

Our focus is on the development of healthy lifestyle habits, fitness, cross-functional athletic skills and sportsmanship to encourage a life-long interest in sports and athletics. We meet once a week for 50 minutes.

​

Spanish:

         We continue to work on listening skills, while at the same time working on vocabulary and basic storytelling.

​

Library:

         Students enjoy time with our librarian every week.
