This summer the SJC students in grades 6-9 had the opportunity to take summer courses with Mr. Michael Lee. The students enrolled in sessions such as Solar Camp, Physics Fun, Fractions and Equations, and Web Page Design.

In the Solar Camp session, students focused on solar energy as they made food in solar ovens, tethered solar balloons, used solar house kits with ceiling fans and lights, experimented with solar radiation cans, and worked with energy conservation ideas.

In the Physics Fun session, students addressed some physics concepts such as energy and forces. They made pasta bridges (with hot glue), mousetrap cars, and built contraptions to drop an egg from a building safely. Unfortunately, their were no egg “survivors”.

In the Fractions and Equations session, students focused on working with fractions and solving equations. Topics such as finding equivalent fractions; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions; and working with complex fractions were discussed. The students even worked on solving one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations.

Finally, the Web Page Design session focused on learning basic HTML and CSS. Students learned about basic webpage design and made their own web pages. Students were also introduced to our schools dynamically database driven design.

In all the sessions, the students learned a lot and had tons of fun.
