The Academic Decathlon Team performed extremely well at this year’s Junior High Academic Decathlon held on Saturday March, 8 at Archbishop Mitty High School. The team took Fourth Place overall. The competition is comprised of a group logic test, 8 individual tests, and the super quiz. The logic quiz is a 20-question group test where all 10 members of the decathlon team work together to answer questions requiring rigorous thinking. The 8 individual tests are administered in the following subject areas: mathematics, religion, current events, science, social studies, English, literature, and fine arts. The Super Quiz is a 50-question multiple-choice test which is viewed live by an audience. It is an exciting event as spectators can watch the points add up for all of the teams participating on the floor. This year there were 15 teams participating. The Super Quiz contains 10 questions from 5 of the 8 individual test areas. We scored Third Place on the logic quiz and Second Place on the Super Quiz. One of our Eighth Graders won First Place in the Mathematics Quiz and another Eighth Grader took Fifth Place in the Religion Quiz. All of these successes added up as our team won fourth place overall. We would like to thank our Coaches Mrs. Ida Henschied, Mrs. Mimi Qian, and Mr. Ken O’Boyle for coaching the students. Furthermore, we would like to thank Mrs. Deborah Miller for being the Academic Decathlon Moderator and Mrs. Barbara Hill for helping the team whenever they needed it. Alumni Zahi Hakim and Tracey Myint also helped by provide their wisdom from participating in past academic decathlons and making copies for this year's team. The Seventh Grade Academic Decathlon Alternate Team also deserves a round of thanks for going through all of the training just as the main team and being ready to step in at a moment's notice. Congratulations to the team who worked hard, studied for many hours, attended weekly practice sessions, and developed a sense of teamwork. We see that all of their efforts paid off. We’re proud of you, Academic Decathlon team. |
