OPERRATION RICE BOWLWe participated in Catholic Relief Service’s Operation Rice Bowl as part of our Lenten journey. This was our almsgiving project. We blessed the Rice Bowl boxes at our Morning Assembly and then sent them home along with an Operation Rice Bowl, an Ash Wednesday Family Prayer Service, and some other Lenten prayers. WORLD HUNGER AWARENESS DAYThis was a powerful experience for your child. As a school community we gave up snacks and lunches filled with our favorite items. The teachers of students in Grades K-2 provided simple snacks for the students at recess; children in Grades 3-8 gave up recess snacks. Then, rather than having our usual buffet of hot lunch items, we will all ate a simple meal of beans, rice, and water. In our classrooms, we blessed the food, and dedicated our meal to children who live in poverty. Children in the poverty-stricken areas of our world would be eating plain rice and plain beans. Their portions would be small, and they would be eating the same thing day after day. And yet still, these poor children would be so grateful just to have food. It is good for us and for our children to take time to remember how truly blessed we are. It is so easy for all of us, adult and child alike, to take these blessings for granted and to become spoiled. Yet we know that Jesus calls us to share what we have with those who have so much less. Through this special week, special day, and special meal, we, as a school community, stood in solidarity with the poor and hungry throughout the world, just as Jesus has called us to do. |
